World earth day – significance in 2021

“What’s the use of a fine house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on.” – Henry David Thoreau

The Earth, a living spaceship flying through the cosmos at 1000 miles per hour.  During the global quarantine our separation from nature is more striking. Humanity had to close their doors to nature. Nature has awakened into a new environment, breathing a sigh of relief from humanity.

Earth day has been marked to celebrate the planet’s environment and raise public awareness about pollution. It is on April 22nd every year to show support for environmental conservation. It is a global movement. Celebrated with rallies, conferences, outdoor activities and service projects. The day motivates people to plant more trees and be mindful of our harmful activities. The first Earth Day was in 1970 and now involves celebrations organized internationally in more than 193 countries. It was brought up by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin.  After seeing the damage caused by the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara California in 1969. This made him inspired to educate the public about the environment. Senator Nelson died in 2005, but the day he made still lives on.

In 1995 President Bill Clinton awarded Nelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom for being the founder of Earth Day. This is one of the highest honors given to civilians in the United States.

Restore Our Earth

The theme of mother Earth Day 2021 is ‘Restore Our Earth’.  Our local communities are disproportionately impacted by environmental issues. It is our duty to restore our earth. Because we live on it, not only because we care for nature. This year Earth Day 2020 marks the 51st anniversary.

Earth day Achievements

  1. In 1990 Earth Day went global. 141 countries and 200 million people took part in the event.

  3. The 40th anniversary of Earth Day 225,000 people gathered at the National Mall for a climate rally in 2010.
  4. In 2012 Earth Day achieved their goal of planting 1 billion trees.
  5. Earth Day 2020 marked 50 years. Global activations that aim to mobilize a billion people worldwide for transformative action for our planet.

Earth day History

Americans were becoming aware of the effects of pollution on the environment by the early 1960s. Rachel Carson’s 1962 bestseller Silent Spring elevated the wraith of the dangerous effects of pesticides on the American countryside. Later in the decade, a 1969 fire on Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River shed light on the adversity of chemical waste disposal. Until then, conserving the planet’s natural resources was not a section of the national political agenda. Many activists devoted themselves to large-scale issues such as industrial pollution. Factories discharged pollutants into the lakes, air and rivers with few legal consequences. Big cars which used a lot of fuel were considered a sign of prosperity. A very few people in the American population were aware of recycling. In 2009, the Day was renamed officially by the UN as International Mother Earth Day.

Importance of Earth day

“I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things we could use.” Words by Mother Teresa. The earth can thrive without us, but we cannot survive without her. Earth day is observed as a reminder. Each one of us must be aware that Earth and its habitats provide us with life and subsistence. No matter when we celebrate Earth Day, it is a thought about our responsibility that we share towards the environment. Although Earth Day has become famous, people have lost interest in environmentalism. Nowadays we are facing many environmental issues. Air pollution, climate change, and global warming have made our earth in crisis. Dangers of climate change are exaggerating. It reminds us to change the way we treat our planet.

How to Celebrate Earth day

It is what we do now that will determine our future. Rejoice Earth Day by learning about what your actions do to the environment. We must also learn why nurturing the earth’s ecosystems is important to our survival. Try to plant more and more trees to have a healthy environment around you.

Spread the need of conservation through social media and let your friends and family know why protecting the earth is essential to you.

Earth Day is still important. It reminds people to think about humanity’s values, the threats that the planet faces and ways to help protect the environment. We should all contribute by planting more trees, reducing waste, recycling and reuse things. What would you do to protect our mother planet?
