Nita Ambani is such a kind of woman. Beforehand she was known to be the wife of the richest Indian. The wife of Mukesh Ambani. It was just a short time ago that she had stepped into herself and it was her particular decision, in the sense that she wanted to let her work talk for itself and for herself too. She hadn’t thought of possessing her work or in making a show out of it. She got to know the importance of the Ambani family name, quite early in her life.
Nita Dalal Mukesh Ambani was born to Ravindrabhai Dalal and Purnima Dalal on 1st November 1963. She is a non-executive director of Reliance Industries. With a family fortune estimated in excess of US $20billion. She is reportedly India’s wealthiest woman. She grew up in a middle-class environment in Suburban Mumbai. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in commerce. She met Mukesh Ambani when she was working as a teacher. She got married to him in 1988. He is the son of the Indian business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani. Years after her marriage, Nita Ambani once asked Mukesh Ambani to open a school in the rural area and the couple ended up opening a school in Jamnagar. Nita Ambani thought of teaching for the rest of her life.
Nita Ambani’s aim was to serve with quality education in India. She initiated the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in the year 2003. Her insight was to give good quality education to people who headed to foreign countries. Her dream was to give good teaching schools, colleges, and teachers. They have two sons and a daughter. She is very fond of sports and became the co-owner of Indian Premier League team, Mumbai Indians. She studied Bharat Natyam and performed frequently. She always had a thing for dancing so took up Bharatnatyam classes from a young age. Soon, she became a professional Bharatanatyam dancer. Nita Ambani was connected in the project of building a company township for the employees of Reliance mega-refinery at Jamnagar in 1997. Talking about her work, in an interview, she said, “I have a moving office. If I am at the school, then everything moves there. If it’s IPL season, then all the work happens from the stadium or the place where the cricketers are staying. If I am at the hospital, then all my meetings happen there. I don’t really have one fixed place that I operate out of.”
In the 2006 edition she was the most influential women business leaders in Asia listed by Forbes. She is also an art collector who loves art. She is a recipient of numerous honors. Ambani was honored by the Metropolitan museum in New York for her work in philanthropy, education and promoting the arts. In June 2010, she was among eight candidates nominated for membership in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by Swiss-based panel. She was elected as a member of IOC on 4th August 2016. She has been the first woman member.
Nita could have easily sat in her comfort zone doing nothing, being the wife of the richest Indian but she realized her potential and the importance of carrying forward the family legacy and worked intensely towards integrating herself with the education, corporate, and healthcare sectors. Her success has been phenomenal. She shared that the role of being a mother comes first for her in an interview.
