As per the survey from Story India.com team Make In India has bundled up a lot of achievements till today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the month of September 2014 had announced the ambitious policy of Make In India.

Make In India initiatives have three main targets.

  1. To attract foreign investment: attracting capital from foreign countries was one important target. Attracting foreigners or foreign investments helps to improve the investments in the country.
  2. Cut down imports: this says that we must be self-reliant i.e., we must reduce the dependency on import in order to have a favorable balance of trade.
  3. Encourage domestic production: Make In India aimed at making India a manufacturing giant.

 Some of the sectors in Make In India and their progress:

1 Automobile and Automobile Components

Automobile industry has enormous scope and also the sector needs more focus. India is one of the largest manufacturers of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and tractors in the world. India has a reasonable cost over its counterparts. We also have a team of intellectuals who work worldwide as a strong workforce.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • Established Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles (FAME) and National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 (NEMMP) to upgrade electric cars.
  • Launched National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) centres
  • 100% FDI under automatic route subject to all applicable regulations and law is available

The top players have inaugurated manufacturing units namely:

  • ISUZU motors in Sri City Andhra Pradesh
  • Tata Motors & Fiat jointly in Ranjangaon, Pune
  • Suzuki Motors in Ahmedabad
  •  Mercedes Benz In Chakan

2 Aviation

Today, the aviation sector of India holds 9th position in the world and is soon expected to reach heights.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • Introduction of Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) for regional connectivity
  • Incentives in the form of tax concessions are offered.
  • Announced National civil aviation policy 2016 for establishing an integrated ecosystem, to upgrade tourism and expand employment.
  • Airports are being developed under the public-private partnership mode to promote private participation.
  • Initiated GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation system (GAGAN) to support direct air routes, reduce fuel consumption and enhance safety.

  • There has been an increase in passengers carried by scheduled domestic airlines by 29%
  • Common User Domestic Cargo Terminals have been functionalized in 13 cities. It helps to control everything related to cargo services under one roof.

3 BioTechnology

India has grown rapidly in the biotechnology industry. This industry owes its success to the developing government initiatives and R&D activities.

  • Established Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) to aid the industry through mentoring,funding, hand holding and infrastructure support

  • Inaugurated Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) a plant in 2016 for the manufacture of Phytopharmaceuticals
  • In 2015, launched a virtual centre across five Indian Institutes of Technology to develop and advance technologies in the area of biofuels
  • Supported and established 30 Bio-incubators and Biotech Parks from April 2014 to September 2016
  • Launched first indigenously developed and manufactured rotavirus vaccine ‘Rotavac’ in 2015

4 Chemicals and Petrochemicals

This industry is a backbone to many other industries which makes it a profitable option. Components like raw material availability and innovation offer an incentive to the companies.

  • One of the biggest projects is the Assam Gas Cracker project expected to produce about 2.8 lakh MT polymers per annum and also to indirectly offer employment to 100000 people.
  • A scheme is built to launch need-based plastic parks with best infrastructure facilities with financial assistance up to 50% of the project cost

  • Increased FDI equity inflows in the sector by 107%
  • Commissioned 0.44 Million MT Per Annum Polypropylene Plant at Mangalore

5 Construction

The requirement for real estate and infrastructure projects has increased over years.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • With an intention to achieve infrastructure development , a city challenge competition was held under the 100 smart cities missions
  • Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) is a mission which focuses on delivering basic infrastructure facilities
  • Established Swachh Bharat mission to encourage healthy sanitation practices
  • Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) concentrates on revitalizing the Indian Heritage sites
  • The Real Estate (Regulation & Development) Act, 2016 has been the ultimate victory of this sector

  • Constructed 1.7 million houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) houses.
  • This industry stands 2nd in terms of supplying employment, after agriculture. 35 million people have been employed.

6 Defence

India has unlocked its gates of the defence sector to privatisation which was a very important step to hold the domestic markets and meet the defence requirements.

  • The opening of the defence sector to the private sector is giving way for strategic partnerships
  • 100% FDI i. Upto 49% automatic route ii. Above 49% government route
  • Established A ‘Make in India’ portal for Defence Production (www.makeinindiadefence.com) which provides policy and procedural problems which are of need for the defence manufacturing industry

  • Many products manufactured in India like HAL Tejas Light combat aircraft by sourcing 95% of the resources required locally
  • Defence equipment costing to INR 2059.18 Crore have been exported to 28 countries in FY 2015-16

7 Electrical Machinery

In this sector, Indian manufacturers are high at competitiveness with respect to product design, manufacturing & testing facilities.

  • Incentives for capacity addition in power generation will serve as a means to increase the demand for electrical machinery
  • In the automatic route subject to rules and regulations 100% FDI is allowed

Progress based on latest reports

  • Electrical Machinery industry recorded a double-digit growth rate of 12.8% over 2017-18
  • The country has changed from a net importer of electricity to a net exporter of electricity

8 Electronic Systems

This is a sector where the aim has been on import substitution.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • The improved SIPS scheme has been developed in order to draw investment into this sector
  • Export incentives 2-3% are made available under the Merchandise export from India scheme
  • The export promotion capital goods scheme provides zero customs duty for import of capital goods used for pre-production, production and post production

  • Almost 38 mobile manufacturing units have been established which have made employment of about 38300
  • Around 99.56 lakh candidates have been enrolled for training under Digital Saksharta Abhiyan(DISHA)

9 IT and BPM

The Information technology sector provides a countable share to the exports. This is the largest private sector industry which provides millions of job opportunities

  • Convenient government policies and initiatives serve as an incentive to invest in this sector
  • The Digital India campaign has given a lot of investment with digital delivery standing as a focus point

  • Total FDI equity inflow in Computer software and hardware sector saw a huge growth from 2.3 Billion to 5.9 Billion

10 Mining

Mining is found as the milestone of the Indian economy.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • Amended the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act 1957 (MMDR) with greater transparency as its motive
  • Established District Mineral Foundation for grievance redressal and also to enhance the image of mining

  • In terms of Gross Value Added this sector has developed by 10.5% in 2016-17 and 12.5% in 2017-18

11 Oil and Gas

The growing population and the economy of India has served the Oil and Gas Industry.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • (HELP) Hydrocarbon Exploration & Licensing Policy provides for a uniform licensing system, no awaiting a formal bid round and incentives on royalty rates for offshore blocks
  • 15% of additional depreciation on installation of capital equipment acquired is permitted

Progress based on latest reports

  • Gujarat has refineries specially for exports which made India a net exporter of petroleum while we are a net importer of crude oil
  • Refining capability of India has been increased by 15 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum due to the commissioning of Paradip Refinery in February 2016
  • At Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Padur Crude Oil Strategic storage of 5.33 MMT capacity was built

12 Railways

 India stays at a height with a ranking of World’s No 3 in terms of the railway network extending more than 66030 Kms.

  • Public Private Partnership mode to improve passenger amenities
  • To improve passenger experience Project Swarn targets were introduced in order to facilitate this 14 Rajdhanis and 15 Shatabdi trains are identified
  • Mission Raftaar has at its core the doubling of average speed of freight trains and also increasing the speed of all non-suburban trains

  • A remarkable achievement took place in the year 2017-18 is 51 trains have been speeded up by more than an hour
  • The is the fastest train in India is Gatimaan Express which covers a distance of 188 Kms in 1 hour and 40 mins
  • Madhepura India has joined hands with M/s Alstom Manufacturing India In order to set up an electric locomotive factory and for setting up a diesel locomotive factory with GE Global Sourcing India Pvt Ltd at Marhowrah amounting to a total of INR 40000 Crore

13 Tourism and hospitality 

Tourism and hospitality is the essence of an economy. This sector is the third largest foreign exchange earner in line.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • Launched Swadesh Darshan scheme to serve mass and niche tourism
  • The National Mission for Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive had the beautification of pilgrimage sites as its focus
  • The facility of e-tourist visa has been extended to travellers of 150 countries

Progress based on latest reports

  • India crawled up 13 places from 65 to 52 according to the 2015 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum
  • Increased Foreign Exchange Earnings from INR 1351 Billion(FY 2015-16) to INR 1556 Billion
  • Tourism and hospitality is among the top 10 sectors when it comes to the FDI inflow. The FDI inflow has increased by 72% (2015-16 vs 2014-15)   

14 Renewable Energy

There has been a rapid growth in the demand for energy in the country and it is vital to use renewable sources of energy.

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • Fiscal incentives have been provided
  • To improve usage of renewable energy sources, the clean environment has been doubled from INR 200 per tonne to INR 400 per tonne.
  • As to encourage clean energy co-operation a joint Indo-US PACE Setter fund has been established with a contribution of USD 4 Million

  • World’s largest solar power plant was placed in Tamil Nadu with an immense capacity of 648 MW
  • Increase in 140% of the solar power capacity (2014-16 vs 2012-14)
  • In 21 states 34 Solar parks have been sanctioned and INR 356.63 Crores has been provided to Solar Energy Corporation of India for the same

15 Roads and Highways

The government is engaged in taking a huge step to modify highways and expressways. Government is supporting the development of this sector by giving subsidies, tax exemptions and duty free imports of high capacity and modern, road construction equipment 

Incentives offered/Programs Launched

  • Government takes burden of cost on project shifting of utilities, feasibility study, environment clearance etc
  • 40% subsidy of the project cost is provided as an incentive
  • Funds are provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways(MoRTH) to the state government to develop state roads

Progress based on latest reports

  • The greatest achievement for the year 2017-18 are 8088 km of road length awarded,7589 km of construction completed and 2156 km of highways tolled
  •  A significant growth in length of the national highways has seen from 91287 km in 2014 to 115435 km in 2017

16 Wellness 

The demand for AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha) has seen a huge lift over the years.

  • In the AYUSH sector 100% FDI is permitted
  • Established AYUSH Sector Innovation Council by the government of India.

  • India stands second in exporting AYUSH and herbal products
  • Wellness sector has a huge potential to create jobs to the level of 3 million jobs
