Many people find politics boring. Their view on politics is as the government and the laws being made. It is way too complicated than that. It is very important to care about politics because it is a responsibility of a citizen to know what is going on around you.

Our government and politics shape how we live.  So it is important to become involved with the local government. Political leaders show us how a society must be set up and how one should act within a society. So let us know some famous leaders and politicians from Uttar Pradesh.

1. Ram Nath Kovind

The 14th president elect of the republic of India.  He was nominated as the presidential nominee by the ruling party and won the 2017 presidential election against Meira Kumar. He won the election with 65.65% of total votes.

On 1st of October 1945, a boy was born in Paraunkh village in the Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh. His father Maiku Lal was a landless Dalit who ran a small grocery shop to support his big family.

He became the first person from Uttar Pradesh to serve as President of India. Earlier to his presidency, he proved his service as the 26th governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017and as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006. Before stepping his foot into politics, he worked as a lawyer for 16 years. He got experience in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India until 1993.

2. Motilal Nehru

Born on 6 May 1861, Motilal Nehru was an Indian lawyer, politician and activist who belonged to the Indian National Congress. He also twice became the Congress President from 1919–1920 and 1928–1929. He belonged to the Nehru-Gandhi family and was the father of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. He died on 6 February 1931.

3. Gopal Swarup Pathak

The fourth vice president of India Gopal Swarup Pathak was born on 26 February 1896 who served from August 1969 to August 1974. He did not succeed his superior as President. His birthplace was in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and at Allahabad University he studied law. He expired on 4 October 1982.

4. Akhlaq Ur Rehman Kidwai

An Indian chemist and politician, Akhlaq Ur Rehman Kidwai was born on 1 July 1921. Kidwai worked as governor of the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Haryana. From 1999 to 2004, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament. He achieved India’s second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan. His birthplace was in Baragaon village of Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh. He died on 24 August 2016.

5. Khurshed Alam Khan

An Indian politician and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress political party Khurshed Alam Khan was born on 5 February 1919.

From 1991 to 1999, he was Governor of Karnataka and from 1989 to 1991 governor of Goa. He was Union minister of External affairs in Government of India earlier. He was connected with Jamia Millia Islamia. He died on 20 July 2013

6. Sucheta Kripalani

India’s foremost woman chief minister who worked as the head of Uttar Pradesh Government from 1963 to 1967 she inspired students to join the freedom movement.  She worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi and also was jailed by the British. She said the national anthem before Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on August 14th 1947 when he made his famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech.  

She came to the forefront during the Quit India Movement like her peers Aruna Asaf Ali and Usha Mehta.

7. Sheila Kaul

A woman who handled several positions, this formidable lady was born on 7 February 1915. Sheila Kaul was a social democratic leader of the Indian National Congress, cabinet minister, a stateswoman, governor. She was the oldest living former Member of Parliament in India at the time of her death. She was also a social reformer, social worker and educator in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Sheila was also an independence activist in British India. She was Indira Gandhi’s maternal aunt and Jawaharlal Nehru’s sister-in-law and. She passed away on 13 June 2015.

8. Akhilesh Yadav

Born 1 July 1973, Akhilesh Yadav, is an Indian politician and national president of the Samajwadi Party who became the 20th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017. On 15 March 2012, he held the office at the age of 38. He became the youngest person to have the office. Being elected in 2019, he is the Member of Parliament for Azamgarh in the 17th Lok Sabha.

Being elected as the Member of the Lok Sabha for the Kannauj constituency in 2000 was his first major success in politics. He is the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav, a veteran politician, the founder-patron of Samajwadi Party who became the Minister of Defence in the Government of India and three terms as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

9. Arif Mohammad Khan

Born on 18 November 1951 in Bulandshahr, Arif Mohammad Khan isan Indian politician who at present serves as the Governor of Kerala. He was earlier Union Minister. He has conducted many portfolios varying from energy to civil aviation. He completed his Schooling at Jamia Millia, Delhi, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and at Shia College, Lucknow University.

He has without fail backed reformation within Muslims. He resigned from the position of Minister of state protesting against Rajiv Gandhi Congress Government stand on Shah Bano case in 1986.

10. Raj Narain

Raj Narain was born on 15 March 1917, 31 December 1986) was an Indian politician and freedom fighter. He was born in a Brahmin family in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He won against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a famous electoral malpractice case.  In 1975, this led to her elimination and imposing of Emergency in India. During the 1977 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Indira Gandhi.
